The Bay of Somme

Added byHichemMopingo

This journey invites you to explore one of the most beautiful estuaries in Europe through varied experiences, between wild nature, living heritage and suspended moments.

Starting from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the walk begins on the heights of Cap Hornu, just as the sun dips below the horizon. The bay blazes with color, silhouettes stand out, and one quickly understands why painters have found so much inspiration here. The next day, it's off to the water: a trip in a dugout canoe or kayak offers the chance to get up close to the seals in the bay, in the silence of the tides and the whisper of the wind.

On land, the Henson Equestrian Centers offer a gentle immersion amidst dunes and salt marshes, riding horses born right here. For a change of perspective, hop aboard the Bay of Somme steam train: a retro journey between Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery, punctuated by the whistles of the past and panoramic views.

Nature lovers will find their paradise at the Marquenterre Park and the Hâble d'Ault, veritable havens for migratory birds. The Bois de Cise, a small, secluded valley nestled between the cliffs, offers a verdant and romantic escape.

In terms of heritage, the medieval town of Saint-Valery and the Picarvie Museum recount the lives of Picardy's fishermen and artisans of yesteryear. To extend the exploration, the Maison de la Baie (Bay House) offers an educational and engaging approach to this fragile ecosystem.

Finally, time to relax: a stroll along the boardwalk in Cayeux-sur-Mer, a break on the beach at Le Crotoy, or a detour to the Hourdel Lighthouse to admire the rising tide. Here, every bit of light transforms the landscape, every moment becomes a postcard.

A stay between land and sea, ideal for breathing, observing and marveling. The Bay of Somme is like a breath of fresh air and a wealth of emotions.
